How to Call the US from India

India to the US is ZippCall’s most-used calling route by a significant margin: tens of thousands of calls, more than the next five routes combined. That reflects how many people in India need to reach US numbers on a regular basis — family in the diaspora, clients, banks, insurance lines, customer service. The dial format is straightforward. What is less obvious is how widely the cost varies depending on which carrier you are on and how you set things up. This guide covers what the main options actually charge and which one makes sense for regular callers.

The short answer

On a mobile, dial +1 followed by the 10-digit US number.

On a landline, dial 00 1 followed by the 10-digit US number.

US numbers are always 10 digits: a 3-digit area code followed by a 7-digit local number. There is no leading zero to drop. A number listed as (212) 555 0100 would be dialled:

  • Mobile: +1 212 555 0100
  • Landline: 00 1 212 555 0100

A note on +1

+1 is the US country code, but it also covers Canada and several Caribbean territories including Jamaica, Trinidad, and Puerto Rico. In practice this rarely matters. You will almost always know who you are calling, but +1 alone does not confirm the number is American.

Option 1: Your Indian carrier (ISD)

Most Indian mobile carriers support international calls through ISD (International Subscriber Dialling). The rate you pay depends on your carrier and whether you have an active pack.

Jio

Jio’s standard rate to US numbers is ₹0.50 per minute (50 paise), roughly $0.006. That is already among the most competitive carrier rates available, and it does not require a separate add-on. The Jio USA-Canada ISD Pack (₹38 for 30 minutes) works out to about ₹1.27 per minute, which is actually more expensive than calling at the standard rate. The pack offers a fixed block of guaranteed minutes rather than a better per-minute rate. For most Jio users, the standard rate is the better deal. See current rates at jio.com/international-services.

Airtel

Airtel’s standard rate to the US is ₹8 per minute (~$0.09). At that rate, a 30-minute call costs around ₹240. The Airtel ISD pack brings the rate down to ₹2 per minute and costs ₹50 per month. That works out if you make enough calls to use the pack each month — but the pack expires whether you use it or not. If you call a few times one month and skip the next, the value disappears quickly. See current rates at airtel.in/isd-call-charges.

Vi (Vodafone Idea)

Vi’s standard rate is ₹8 per minute, the same as Airtel without a pack. The Vi ISD pack drops this to ₹0.50 per minute (50 paise) and costs ₹30 per month. Like Airtel’s pack, it expires at the end of the month. See current rates at myvi.in/postpaid/isd-call-rates.

ISD activation

ISD calling is not enabled by default on all prepaid plans. If you have not made an international call from your current SIM before, check that ISD is active before you dial. The quickest way is through your carrier app (MyJio or My Airtel) or their website after logging in. A failed call with no clear error is often an ISD activation issue rather than a problem with the number itself.

US toll-free numbers (1-800, 1-888, 1-877) are not free to call from India. Standard ISD rates apply, and some are configured to block international callers entirely. If a call to a US toll-free number will not connect, look for a direct international number on the company’s contact page.

Option 2: ZippCall

ZippCall is a pay-as-you-go calling service that works from any browser or app. You add credit when you need it, calls to the US cost $0.02 per minute, and the credit does not expire. The person you call receives a normal phone call on whatever device they use; they do not need an app or any prior setup.

India to the US accounts for more calls on ZippCall than any other route — tens of thousands, more than the next five combined. For people calling US numbers regularly, a no-expiry PAYG service removes the decisions that come with carrier packs: whether it is worth activating this month, whether you will use up the minutes before they expire, whether ISD is even enabled on the SIM you are using. ZippCall works from any device with a browser and a connection.

For Jio users, the rate comparison is close ($0.006/min via Jio vs $0.02/min via ZippCall). The practical case for ZippCall here is not price — it is setup. No ISD activation step, no carrier settings to check, and it works from a laptop or tablet as readily as from a phone.

For Airtel users on the standard rate, the difference is larger. At ₹8 per minute, a 30-minute call to a US number costs around ₹240 (~$2.90). At $0.02 per minute on ZippCall, the same call costs about $0.60 (~₹50).

David, who needed to resolve an urgent issue with his US bank, put the cost in practical terms:

“I recently had to make a 50-minute call from Venezuela to my bank in the United States to resolve an urgent issue. What surprised me the most was the reliability. Throughout the entire call the audio clarity remained excellent, with no drops or lag. Even better was the price. The whole call cost me just $1.”

Mohammad Arif, a ZippCall user in India, found the same consistency:

“My experience has been very good and smooth. Calling Africa from India, the call quality was clear and I did not face any major issues like call drops or disturbances. One of the best things I noticed was the stability of the connection. Calls connected quickly, and the voice clarity made communication easy and comfortable.”

Option 3: WhatsApp or Google Meet

For personal calls where the person you are calling also uses WhatsApp or Google Meet, this is free and the right answer. Call quality is generally good on a decent connection, and if you are already in each other’s contacts, there is nothing to configure.

The catch is a firm one: it only works if the other person has the app. You cannot call a US business number, a landline, or anyone who does not use those apps. For client calls, US customer service, banks, or anyone who simply is not reachable via WhatsApp, you need something that calls a real phone number. Things to watch out for

ISD may not be active on your prepaid SIM

If you have not made an international call from your current SIM before, check that ISD is enabled before you try. It is not active by default on all prepaid accounts in India. A silent failed call or an unclear error message when dialling a US number is often an ISD issue. Open your carrier app (MyJio or My Airtel) or log in on their website to check and activate it in a couple of steps.

The time zone gap is wider than most people expect

India Standard Time is ahead of the US by 9.5 to 13.5 hours, depending on the US time zone. That is enough to catch people out if they are not paying attention.

US time zoneIST is ahead byMajor cities
Eastern (ET)10.5 hrs (9.5 during US DST)New York, Boston, Miami
Central (CT)11.5 hrs (10.5 during US DST)Chicago, Dallas, Houston
Mountain (MT)12.5 hrs (11.5 during US DST)Denver, Phoenix
Pacific (PT)13.5 hrs (12.5 during US DST)Los Angeles, San Francisco

For regular calls to US East Coast contacts, 7:30–9:30 PM IST is the most practical window: that is morning business hours in New York and Boston. For West Coast contacts, you need to call later in the evening from India, or early morning.

One practical note: India does not observe daylight saving time, but the US does. The gap shifts by one hour when the US enters or exits DST (second Sunday in March and first Sunday in November). If you call at a fixed time each week, it is worth noting when that shift happens — a call that always landed at a good time may suddenly land an hour earlier or later for your contact.

Frequently asked questions

How do I dial a US number from India?

On a mobile, dial +1 followed by the 10-digit US number — area code first, then the seven-digit local number. On a landline, use 00 1 instead of +1. US numbers have no leading zero, so nothing to adjust.

What is the country code for the US?

The US country code is +1. Canada and several Caribbean territories use the same code. +1 alone does not confirm the number is a US one, but in most situations you will already know.

Does Jio include calls to the US in its plans?

Jio charges ₹0.50 per minute (50 paise) to US numbers at its standard ISD rate — no separate pack required. The Jio USA-Canada ISD Pack (₹38 for 30 minutes) works out to more per minute than the standard rate, so it is generally not the better option. Make sure ISD is active on your account before your first international call.

What is the cheapest way to call the US from India?

If you are on Jio, your standard ISD rate of ₹0.50/min (50p/min) is already very low. If you are on Airtel at the standard rate of ₹8/min, a PAYG calling app is significantly cheaper — ZippCall charges $0.02/min with no monthly commitment and no expiry. If the person you are calling uses WhatsApp, that is free, but it only works between app users.

Why won’t my call to a US 800 number connect?

US toll-free numbers are only free from within the United States. From India, your ISD rate applies, and some US toll-free numbers are configured to block international callers entirely. If the call will not connect at all, look for a direct international number on the company’s contact page rather than using the 800 number.

Is WhatsApp calling to the US free from India?

Yes, if the person you are calling has WhatsApp installed. WhatsApp calls between app users are free over Wi-Fi or mobile data. The limitation is that you cannot call anyone without the app, including businesses, landlines, and people who simply do not use it.

What time should I call the US from India?

New York is 10.5 hours behind IST; Los Angeles is 13.5 hours behind. For East Coast contacts, 7:30–9:30 PM IST is a reliable window — that is morning business hours on the East Coast. For the West Coast, you need to call later in the evening (10 PM IST or after) or in the early morning. The gap shifts by one hour when the US changes its clocks for daylight saving time.

The bottom line

The dial code is simple: +1 and the 10-digit number from your mobile, done.

The more useful question is which option fits your situation.

If you are on Jio, your standard ISD rate (₹0.50/min) is already competitive. The thing to verify is that ISD is active on your account. For calls you want to make from a laptop or tablet, or without touching your carrier settings at all, ZippCall works immediately at a similar rate with no setup.

If you are on Airtel without an ISD pack, the ₹8/min standard rate adds up fast for regular callers. The ISD pack (₹50/month, ₹2/min) reduces this but expires whether you use the minutes or not. A PAYG calling service at $0.02/min with no expiry is the better fit for most people calling the US more than a handful of times each month.

If you are on Vi, the ISD pack (₹30/month) gets you down to ₹0.50/min, close to Jio’s standard rate, but it expires monthly. ZippCall at $0.02/min sits between Vi’s two tiers, without the monthly renewal.

India to the US is ZippCall’s busiest route. Most of those callers are not making one-off calls — they are calling family every week or reaching US clients regularly. For that kind of use, no-expiry credit and no monthly commitment makes more sense than a pack that ticks down whether you call or not.

If the person you are calling is on WhatsApp, that is free. If they are not — or if you are calling a business, a bank, or any number you cannot reach through an app — you need a service that calls a real phone.
