Google Fi is a genuine option for international calling. Whether it makes sense for you depends entirely on which plan you’re on, and whether you need a full US phone plan in the first place. The rates are competitive. The coverage is real. The catch is knowing what you’re actually getting.
This guide covers what each Google Fi plan includes for international calls, current rates from the US to popular destinations, what happens when you travel, and the honest answer to whether it’s worth switching.
What Google Fi is
Google Fi Wireless is a mobile network operator run by Google. You get a US mobile number, calls, texts and data, running across multiple networks including T-Mobile and US Cellular. It works on most modern iPhones and Android phones.
For international calling, it comes down to two things: what your plan lets you do when calling from the US, and what it lets you do when you’re actually abroad. These are different, and both depend on which of the four plans you’re on.
The four plans: what each one covers internationally
This is the part the original Google Fi marketing doesn’t make obvious. Not all plans include international calling.

Two things to flag:
Unlimited Essentials has no international calling. It’s the cheapest plan, which makes it fine as a US-only option. But if you travel or want to call internationally from home, it won’t do anything for you.
Unlimited Standard only covers Canada and Mexico while abroad. If you’re traveling to the UK, Europe, or anywhere else, Standard leaves you without cellular coverage. You’d need a local SIM or to upgrade.
The two plans that work properly for international calling are Flexible and Unlimited Premium. Google Fi’s own recommendation: Unlimited Premium if you want everything included, Flexible if you prefer pay-as-you-go data.
Calling from the US to international numbers
This is where Google Fi is genuinely strong. If you’re in the US and want to call someone abroad, rates start low across all plans:

Calling the UK for 30 minutes costs 30 cents on a standard plan. On Unlimited Premium, that call is free. Unlimited Premium’s free-calling list covers 50+ countries including Australia, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Brazil, and most major destinations.

Using Google Fi while you’re abroad
On Flexible and Unlimited Premium, Google Fi works in 200+ countries. Cellular calls (using mobile network coverage) cost a flat $0.20/minute, regardless of where you are or who you’re calling.
That flat rate is actually useful. Most US carriers either block international roaming, charge much more per minute, or require a daily add-on pass at $10–$15/day. Google Fi’s flat rate is simple and predictable.
Wi-Fi calling is also available. If you’re connected to Wi-Fi abroad, calls back to the US are free on Flexible, Standard, and Premium. On Unlimited Standard, international roaming only works in Canada and Mexico. Unlimited Essentials has no international coverage at all.

Is Google Fi worth it for international calling?
The honest answer depends on whether you’re already a Google Fi customer.
If you’re already on Google Fi: yes. The rates from the US are competitive, and the flat $0.20/min roaming rate is straightforward. As long as you’re on Flexible or Unlimited Premium, international calling works well.
If you’re not already on Google Fi: it depends on what you need.
If you need a full US mobile plan anyway, Google Fi is worth comparing. Unlimited Premium is $65/month for one line and includes international data in 200+ countries plus free calls from the US to over 50 destinations. If you travel regularly and those are features you’d actually use, it stacks up well.
If you’re already in contract with another carrier, it generally doesn’t make sense to add Google Fi just for the international calling. You’d be paying for a second phone plan on top of your existing one.
If you only call internationally a few times a month and don’t need a full US mobile plan, signing up for Google Fi to get those per-minute rates doesn’t add up. You’d be paying a monthly plan fee to access rates that, at low call volumes, don’t offset the cost.
Who it makes sense for:
- Existing Google Fi subscribers who call internationally from the US
- Regular travelers who want straightforward roaming without daily add-on passes
- Anyone already considering switching to Google Fi and prioritising international coverage
Who it doesn’t make sense for:
- People under contract with another carrier who only call internationally occasionally
- People who don’t need a full US mobile plan and just want occasional international calls
- People outside the US (Google Fi requires activation inside the US before it works abroad)
If you don’t need a full phone plan
If you just need to make the odd international call without signing up for a new phone plan, a pay-as-you-go calling service is simpler.

The practical dividing line: if international calls are part of a broader mobile plan you’re already using or considering, Google Fi is hard to beat on price. If you just want to make occasional international calls without changing your phone plan, pay-as-you-go makes more sense.
